Interrupting v Interesting

Zara, my 10-month-old baby girl, taught me the difference between marketing and sales with a single glance.

Whenever I call her name to catch her attention, she turns to look at me.

If she doesn’t see something interesting, she just smiles and continues with whatever she’s doing.

That’s sales.

On the other hand, if I make funny noises and do something interesting, she stops whatever she’s doing, looks up, and keeps her eyes fixed on me.

That’s marketing.

Unless pursued by the prospect, calling for their attention is just an interruption. If that interruption is not inviting (like a deal that can’t be turned down), it’ll soon be ignored.

Instead, do something interesting and make sufficient noise to catch their attention. Over time, you’ll notice your prospects will lock their eyes on you and lend their minds to you.

That’s the difference between sales and marketing.

Takeaway

If you’re interesting, your invitation will be accepted. If you’re just interrupting, your invitation will be ignored.

Are you interesting or interrupting? Let me know here.

We need to stop interrupting what people are interested in and be what people are interested in.
