The unit of experience

As a dad of two kids aged 5 and under, I hear this one phrase the most.

“Enjoy this phase, because kids grow real fast!”

While I know what people mean with that phrase, upon hearing it my mind always thinks, “Well technically, they can’t grow any faster or slower!”

It’s true. Not just kids, no one can grow faster or slower. We are all growing up exactly on schedule.

But, what seems to bend time, make it stand still, or even feel like elongated misery, is often how people experience time.

When we go on vacation, we feel like that was a great weekend which went by too fast.

Or, when kids are sick all week, it feels like an ordeal that lasted all month.

The root reason behind this rationale is that no one defined experience as a quantity with specific units to measure it.

It’s not like a great dinner can be measured as +24 units of fun, or that a traffic accident can be measured as -179 units of frustration.

This though, is the opportunity for most brands.

Cash in on this absent metric to define amazing experiences in terms of time that your customers will remember forever.

Takeaway

Curate amazing experiences that seemingly bend time and you will have created memories that last forever.

We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they're called memories.
