St. Patrick’s Day
Fri, Mar 17, 2023
Mar 17 is always celebrated as St. Patrick’s Day.
But what if things we knew about it were not true?
St. Patrick’s actual name isn’t Patrick. In fact, it is Maewyn Succat.
He wasn’t born in Ireland, or to Irish parents. He was actually born in Britain.
In fact, Mar 17 is not even his birthday (Which is when we normally honor such figures).
It’s actually the day he died!
Amazingly, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was not even in Ireland but actually hosted in America.
Alcohol flows through St. Patrick’s Day, but isn’t it funny to know that St. Patrick’s Day was a religious holiday, and hence originally acknowledged as a dry day?
Maewyn Succat did eventually move to Ireland and become their patron saint, but not many of us know the back story.
We often celebrate St. Patrick’s Day without knowing any of these realities.
But as you can see, it’s easy to market a British person as an Irish saint.
Takeaway
Happy St. Patty’s!
